We are proud to say that Sumba Diving is the first dive centre and dive school on the island of Sumba. Located 25 minutes from Tambolaka Airport, our dive resort sits right in the vicinity of Mario Hotel & Café.
At Sumba Diving, we believe in quality over quantity hence we organise dives in small groups as not only is it more intimate, it also allows us to ensure that you are comfortable underwater as well as have a safe and healthy dive experience. Whatever your questions or concerns are, we are all ears and happy to cater to your needs, within reason of course. We put health and safety first above all else hence your safety is our priority. Our experienced dive professionals are here to teach you and help you to become a certified scuba diver. Our aim is not only getting your certified, but also ensuring that you become a conscious and responsible scuba diver. Scuba diving is fun when it is done right. We are a PADI certified centre therefore when you complete your diving course with us, you’ll be part of the PADI family. |
Why Sumba?
Thierry (founder) heard of Sumba and set foot on the island when his brother mentioned to him about moving out to South-East Asia and starting his own eco-resort (Nila Resort). Sumba turned out to be an island that is rich in natural beauty and well out of the path of mass tourism. Also, Sumba does not have a single dive centre. After much exploration under and above ground, Thierry decided to setup Sumba Diving on the north west coast of Sumba as it's waters are more peaceful than the south, as the south is more known for surfing with larger waves. Mario Hotel & Café was an ideal location as you can dive right off the beach plus it has a long powdery-white sandy beach providing a perfect spot to catch some sun between dives. |
The Founder
Sumba Diving was born out of love for the Ocean. As a child, our founder Thierry Gliere, has been enchanted by the world below the surface having being introduced to scuba diving at a tender age of 8-years-old. This introduction, combined with the love of nature and wanting to protect it for the future generations, he pursued a career in Biogeochemical Oceanography with a dream of one day opening up his very own dive centre. The call of the sea was strong, and after a few years working in a lab as an Oceanographer, he made a switch in career and pursed his Open Water Scuba Instructor Certification (OWSI, PADI). This was his first step towards his dream of opening his dive centre. While planning his dive centre setup, he was approached by Rudy Roy who was interested to be a part of Thierry’s project. Rudy has always been an avid traveller and scuba diving enthusiast, and has heard of Thierry’s project through the grapevine. When they finally met in 2019 and after a long lunch, Rudy decided to help Thierry by investing into the company. With a good few years experience as a dive instructor as well as managing a dive centre, and having an investor, he took the plunge and open up Sumba Diving in 2020. |
